Choosing a Lake Zurich cruise with a city programme
A Lake Zurich cruise gives you a different way to spend time around Zurich, but the selected combinations have distinct purposes. One joins a lake outing to public transport and cable car travel, another combines an old town walk with chocolate tastings, and a coach excursion uses a ferry crossing. Choose by the whole programme and how much of your day you want to devote to it.
Start with the water journey you actually want: returning on a round trip feels different from crossing the lake while continuing a land itinerary. For a walking-focused day, explore the old town guide; for the tasting element, see chocolate walks. The wider tour comparison helps you decide whether a mixed itinerary suits your visit better than a separate boat ticket.

Match a lake cruise, a chocolate-and-walk combination or a ferry crossing to the land programme you want.
Three combinations and what they include
The six-hour small-group outing starts at 9:45 outside the Swiss National Museum, Museumstrasse 2, by the vertical museum sign. It includes a local guide, public transport, a lake cruise, a funicular and an aerial cable car ride. This suits visitors interested in moving between several forms of transport during a guided day. The boat is one element of the experience, so consider the land stages as well as the time on the water.
The old town and chocolate combination lasts 180 to 240 minutes. Its included programme consists of a guided old town walk, tastings at three local chocolate shops and a one-hour lake round trip. The meeting place is by the underground staircase near the museum entrance, next to the vertical sign. The stated start is 9:15, or 10:00 on Sundays. That one-hour boat description belongs to the product; current public sailing arrangements follow the operating timetable.
The 270-minute coach combination starts at Sihlquai Bus Station. It includes a guided old town walk, an English- and Spanish-speaking guide, air-conditioned coach travel, a scenic ferry crossing and the Felsenegg cable car. During cable car maintenance, the Dolder cogwheel railway replaces that stage. Choose it if crossing the lake as part of a road-and-rail itinerary appeals to you. The ferry stage is a crossing rather than a lake circuit.
Public boats: the low-water timetable
The special timetable in force from 19 October 2026 gives the small round trip from Bürkliplatz via Kilchberg and back a duration of 55 minutes. Departures are at 10:30, 11:30, 12:30, 14:30, 15:30 and 16:30. The larger replacement round trip lasts one hour 45 minutes, departing Bürkliplatz at 11:20 with a Horgen stop or 13:20 with a Meilen stop. Plan from this arrangement when choosing an independent sailing.
The replacement timetable changes the stops as well as the sailing length. Küsnacht is not served, with Küsnacht Goldbach used on the cross-lake connection instead; Erlenbach is also not served. Choose your onward journey around the actual stop in the special timetable. Allow room in your day for the walk to the landing stage rather than placing another timed activity immediately after the expected return.
Zone tickets, validity and boarding
Public scheduled boats use ZVV zone tickets; GA, Junior and Children’s Co-travelcards are also accepted under their conditions. Buy and activate an electronic ticket before boarding. The route, zones and validity must cover the journey you intend to make, including the return. As a tariff example from the price list effective 14 December 2025, a second-class three-zone single ticket costs CHF 7.20, or CHF 3.60 reduced, and is valid for one hour. This is a tariff category, so select the zones for your actual sailing.
For a meal aboard, a table reservation is a separate arrangement. It is not a reserved passenger seat ticket for the whole sailing. Keep dining plans and transport validity together when organising your day. A guided combination packages its stated transport services; an independent visit needs the relevant travel tickets in addition to any other admission you choose.
Access, the promenade and private boats
The low-water timetable advises against wheelchair and pushchair journeys because boarding access is difficult. Make accessibility the starting point of your plan if it matters to your party. You can also spend time beside the lake on the Seefeld promenade and arrange another city activity, without building your entire day around a boat connection.
A public boat or ferry in a guided itinerary shares its transport setting with other passengers. Charter is a separate format: ZSG offers ships with a captain and crew. If exclusive arrangements are your priority, start with the private tour guide and identify the specific format you want. Treat photographs of the lake and harbour as views of the setting when comparing the actual included services.
Questions about your outing
How long is the current small public round trip?
Under the special timetable valid from 19 October 2026, Bürkliplatz to Kilchberg and back takes 55 minutes. The larger replacement round trip takes one hour 45 minutes.
Which outing combines chocolate and a boat?
The 180 to 240-minute city combination includes an old town walk, tastings at three local chocolate shops and a one-hour lake round trip in its product programme.
Does the ferry combination return around the lake?
Its included water stage is a scenic ferry crossing. It forms part of the coach, walking and cable car itinerary.
Can I reserve a dining table instead of buying a ticket?
A dining reservation and a valid transport ticket serve different purposes. Arrange the ticket for your sailing and the table for your meal.
