Explore Zurich old town with a walking route
Zurich old town is accessible on foot from the main railway station. Niederdorf lies on the right bank of the Limmat, while Lindenhof gives you a view across the river towards the town hall and Grossmünster. Use those landmarks to orient yourself before choosing a guided walk or a separate church visit. A street tour and an interior visit need different amounts of planning because the churches have their own admission arrangements and visiting calendars.
The walking options here include a two-hour old-town tour starting in front of the Visitor Information inside the large HB hall and a two-hour historic-district walk starting at Hirschen-Platz, Niederdorfstrasse 11, outside the entrance to Hotel Hirschen. The former includes an experienced guide and old-town sightseeing through alleys; the latter includes a local guide. For a dedicated private outing, compare the private city tours.

Start with a guided street walk from HB or Hirschen-Platz, or combine the old town with bus transport, a public boat segment and chocolate museum admission.
Niederdorf and the guided walking formats
Niederdorf is a car-free part of the historic centre. A walk is the natural way to give its lanes your attention rather than treating the area as a brief stop in a much larger excursion. Choose the meeting point that fits your arrival, then leave time afterwards for the church interior or museum you most want to explore. The sights guide places Bahnhofstrasse and the waterfront in the wider city picture.
The five-and-a-half-hour city combination begins at Sihlquai Bus Station, Limmatstrasse 2. It includes bus transport, a guide, an old-town walk, a public boat segment described as 30 minutes, and Lindt Home of Chocolate entry with an audio guide in Kilchberg. A 24-hour public transport ticket for zones 110 and 150 is included; FIFA Museum admission belongs only to the selected option. Food and personal expenses are extra. The chocolate museum closes on 3 November 2026 and reopens at noon on 4 November.
Lindenhof and the historical layers
Lindenhof brings several periods of Zurich’s history into one place: a Roman fort in the fourth century, a royal residence in the ninth century and the constitutional oath of the Helvetic Republic in 1798. Its view makes it a useful pause for understanding the relationship between river and old town. The history guide follows the chronology in more depth without turning your walking plan into a list of dates.
Bahnhofstrasse follows a former city moat. The Fraumünster abbey was founded in 853, and Zurich became imperially free in 1218. The story connecting Charlemagne with Grossmünster’s foundation belongs to legend. These distinctions help you read the places you see: some relate to surviving urban form, others to documented milestones or to stories told about the city.
Grossmünster and the Karlsturm
Quiet visits to Grossmünster church are free. In November to February its regular visiting hours are Monday to Saturday 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday noon to 5 pm, with Tuesday closure for organ teaching and further restrictions for church events. The November 2026 calendar lists closures on 3, 10, 14, 17 and 24 November.
The Karlsturm is separate: adult admission is CHF 5 and the climb has 187 steps. Tickets are sold only on site, without reservations. Since 3 August 2026 the tower opens Friday to Sunday only; its winter schedule ends at 4 pm, with Sunday opening at noon. Weather can close it. The published advice places the last ascent one hour before church closure, so leave a generous margin rather than aiming for a last-minute ticket. Leave larger luggage and umbrellas behind for the tower climb.
Fraumünster and the Chagall windows
Fraumünster tourist admission costs CHF 5 for adults and includes the crypt museum. Tickets are sold on site, with cash, TWINT or card accepted. The adult combination ticket for Fraumünster and Karlsturm costs CHF 8; tower opening still determines when the climb is possible. Plan church interiors separately from a general street walk, since the guided walking services described here focus on their own included programme.
In winter, regular Monday to Saturday visits run from 10 am to 5 pm, with last entry 15 minutes before closing. In the November 2026 calendar, 3 November has shortened hours from 10 am to noon, and 18, 27 and 29 November are closed. Groups can have up to 30 people; from eleven people they need their own whisper system. The app audio tour requires headphones.
St. Peter and practical onward planning
St. Peter opens Monday to Friday 9 am to 6 pm, Saturday 9 am to 3 pm and Sunday 9 am to 4 pm. Visits take place outside services and celebrations. Its ground floor and access lift are wheelchair accessible; the gallery and choir are not. Build your route around the part of the church you want to visit and the applicable access conditions.
For a second part of your day, choose between the museums and lake journeys. Public lake services have operated a low-water special timetable since 19 October 2026. Keep the tour’s stated boat inclusion separate from your own plans for an additional public sailing.
Old-town questions
Are church tickets included in the walking tours?
The two-hour walking products described here include guiding. Plan paid church interiors and the Karlsturm with their separate admission arrangements.
Can I reserve the Karlsturm online?
Karlsturm tickets are sold on site without reservations. Since 3 August 2026, opening is limited to Friday through Sunday and remains weather dependent.
Where can I buy Fraumünster tickets?
At the church itself. Adult tourist admission is CHF 5, with the crypt museum included; sales take place at the church rather than online.
