Where to stay in Zurich for your planned visits

Deciding where to stay in Zurich is easier when you compare the journeys you intend to make. The old town puts the historical centre at the heart of your stay. A base near Hauptbahnhof, usually shortened to HB, gives you a rail arrival point and a starting place for train outings. Seefeld brings the lake into the decision, while Kreis 5, or Zurich West, has a different setting shaped by its industrial past and its cultural and dining uses.

Start with your arrival, then place your main activities on the same map. If your priority is the old town, compare the final walk to your accommodation with the streets you want to explore. For several railway outings, look closely at the route to HB. For a lakeside stay, consider how the waterfront fits alongside your museum and city plans, rather than choosing solely from a room photograph.

Old town or Hauptbahnhof

The old town is walkable from HB. Niederdorf lies on the right bank of the Limmat and is a car-free part of the historical centre. A stay here suits a programme built around the river, historic lanes and churches. Lindenhof offers views towards the Limmat, town hall and Grossmünster. Choose the exact address with your luggage route in mind, especially if you are comparing a rail arrival with a road transfer.

HB is a useful reference for rail excursions and the Landesmuseum next door. However, the Bahnhofquai/HB stop is closed through the end of 2026; alternatives for the museum include Central, Bahnhofstrasse/HB and Sihlquai/HB. Uetliberg also needs a specific route during the closure of HB to Selnau through 12 December 2026: the S10 starts at Selnau. Staying near the main station therefore still calls for a little route planning.

Seefeld and Zurich West

Seefeld suits a stay where the lake promenade forms part of the daily route. The neighbourhood also has traffic-affected streets along Bellerive-, Dufour- and Seefeldstrasse. Look at the position of the individual accommodation rather than treating the entire district as one type of street. A waterfront walk and a lake cruise are separate activities: choose the actual sailing and departure before arranging the rest of that day.

Kreis 5, Zurich West, is a former industrial area associated with culture and gastronomy. Consider it if those are priorities in your city programme. Compare the trip from the address to your chosen historical sights and transport connections. For a visit centred on the old town, make that journey part of the decision; for a programme mixing culture and food, think about where you want to finish each day as well as where it starts.

Zürich Card and local transport

The Zürich Card is a paid visitor product with unlimited second-class travel within its designated city and surrounding area, plus free or reduced museum admission depending on the partner. The Landesmuseum confirms free entry with the card. Build the comparison around the journeys and museums you actually intend to use, and check each museum's applicable admission arrangement. A local card and a nationwide rail pass serve different plans.

For arrival from the airport, the train or S-Bahn journey to HB takes about 10 to 15 minutes; tram 10 takes about 35 minutes. Add the final leg to the accommodation when comparing those choices. The airport guide sets out the fares and the separate taxi and private-transfer options. If buying a Zürich Card for a start date from 13 December 2026, consult the price for that start date because a price change has been announced.

The shared day excursion offered here includes hotel pickup and drop-off, a local driver/guide and an air-conditioned vehicle. It runs with at least three passengers and has a duration of 540 to 660 minutes. Its inclusions distinguish a Rhine Falls boat trip from March to October and a panoramic-platform ticket from November to February. Treat pickup as a feature of this particular excursion when comparing your day-trip choices, and keep the rest of your city transport plan separate.

Questions about choosing a base

Which area suits historic sightseeing?

The old town in Kreis 1 puts historic streets at the centre of your programme. Compare the exact accommodation address with the walks and church visits you intend to make.

Why consider a stay near HB?

HB is the main rail arrival point and can be a starting point for excursions. The Landesmuseum is nearby. Check the particular departure point, including the temporary S10 departure from Selnau.

How should I budget for local travel?

Compare individual journeys with the paid Zürich Card and any rail pass you already hold. Base the choice on the transport area and museum benefits you will use, rather than adding overlapping products.
