Uetliberg: Train Trips, Walks and Views over Zurich

Uetliberg combines a rail outing with a viewpoint or a longer walk towards Felsenegg. Until 12 December 2026 inclusive, the S10 starts from Selnau because the section from Zürich HB is closed.

Plan a Uetliberg outing around the railway

Uetliberg is an option for a rail trip, a viewpoint visit or a walk on the Planet Trail towards Felsenegg. Begin with the journey: the S10 runs towards Uetliberg from Selnau while the section between Zürich HB and Selnau remains closed until 12 December 2026 inclusive. Reopening on 13 December is announced, rather than already in effect at the November information check.

The experiences here take different approaches. A bus-and-rail combination adds an audio-guided city tour before the mountain outing. The guided raclette experience concentrates on Uetliberg with an included train ticket and a local guide. For other city formats, see the Zurich tour comparison; for a day primarily on foot in town, use the sightseeing guide.

Reach Selnau from Zürich HB

The temporary access route matters even if your accommodation or arrival is close to the main station. The published alternative from HB is about twelve minutes on foot to Selnau. Another option is tram 3 or 14 to Stauffacher, followed by a six-minute walk. Treat those as access legs to the railway, and leave room for the connection itself.

An alternative goes by tram 14 from HB to Triemli, with a steep seven-minute walk to Triemli railway station, where the S10 continues towards Uetliberg. Allow a longer overall journey for that route. Choose the transfer you are comfortable making rather than assuming every route from HB is equally convenient with bags or a tightly timed meeting.

A tour meeting point at Zürich HB is the place where the group assembles. During this closure, the S10 departure is at Selnau. Keep the meeting instructions for your booked experience separate from the public-transport route for an independent outing. The airport and arrival guide explains the earlier part of the journey if you are reaching the city that day.

City bus and train, or a guided raclette visit?

The audio-guided combination lasts four hours and starts at Zürich Bus Station, Ausstellungsstrasse 5. It includes a two-hour sightseeing tour in an air-conditioned bus, commentary in eleven languages and a Uetlibergbahn ticket. Hotel pickup and drop-off, food and drinks are excluded. This format suits a visitor who wants city orientation as well as a railway outing within the same programme.

The raclette experience lasts two and a half hours and meets at Zürich HB, Bahnhofplatz. A local guide accompanies the experience in English, Spanish and German, and the guided journey to the viewpoint includes the train ticket. Traditional Swiss raclette is included; drinks and additional food cost extra. It suits visitors who want the viewpoint to be the focus, with a food element rather than a separate city bus tour.

Advice about arranging a Zurich day ticket is offered for the raclette experience. That advice is separate from the included train ticket. Choose between the actual programmes rather than adding every possible activity to either outing. In particular, an independent continuation along the Planet Trail needs its own space in your schedule.

Planet Trail to the Felsenegg cable-car station

The Planet Trail connects Uetliberg station with the upper station of the Felsenegg cable car and can be walked in either direction. Allow approximately two hours of walking. Use this as the walking component when arranging the day, then allow separately for reaching the trail, pauses and your onward journey. A rail visit to the viewpoint and this longer walk make different demands on your timetable.

Before choosing the trail, look at current path conditions and the weather for your visit. The approximate walking time is not a promise of clear winter paths. Keep a shorter outing available when conditions do not suit the longer walk, and avoid planning the entire day around a guaranteed distant view. The seasonal planning guide brings together other operating changes that may affect your city programme.

Keep the rest of the day flexible

If the walk is your priority, leave the museum or old-town programme for another part of the trip. If your priority is an introductory city day, the bus combination makes a clearer choice than trying to attach a long independent hike to it. For an indoor alternative, compare the museum subjects and admission options and choose one that interests you before setting out.
